MUMBAI—“Pad Man” Akshay Kumar turned ‘PowerWalk Man’ – he flagged off the annual Max Bupa walkathon, urging Indians to put their health first.
The 7-km competitive category, Power Walk, introduced in India through the event, had actor and VJ Rannvijay becomes the first-ever ambassador of Power Walk in India. Wellness enthusiasts Sucheta Pal and Mickey Mehta kept the participants entertained with fitness activities.
With the aim to motivate people to lead healthier and more successful lives, Max Bupa hosted the sixth edition of its flagship event, “Max Bupa Walk for Health” in Mumbai on Feb. 4. The annual much-awaited walkathon was flagged off by Akshay Kumar, along with Max Bupa’s MD and CEO, Ashish Mehrotra.
The health event also saw participation from India’s leading Holistic Health guru, Dr. Mickey Mehta and International Zumba Education specialist and master trainer for India Sucheta Pal.
Max Bupa Walk for Health is a first-of-its-kind initiative that has been educating Indians about the benefits of walking to bring about a positive and long-term sustainable behavioral change in their health and overall well-being. The mega- event was held at SNDT Women’s University in Juhu.
This year, the event also endeavored to educate people to walk for the health of their city and the environment while walking for their own health. To this end, Max Bupa unveiled a first-of-its-kind specially-engineered PowerWalk Machine that generates electricity/ power through human steps.
Akshay Kumar Power-Walked on the Max Bupa machine to generate electricity. The actor also stressed on the dual health benefits of such an innovative PowerWalk Machine on physical health and the environment (saving natural resources consumed in generating electricity) and urged Mumbai residents to take up the intense form of walking.
Kumar said, “There is absolutely no excuse for ignoring one’s health, we’ve got one body, one heart, one chance, let’s live it like we’re scared of losing it. Fitness is not about showing off six-pack abs built from a bottle full of enhancers. Fitness is about becoming the best version of You, and no matter what level you may be at, level 1 is better than zero. So I urge one and all to respect the body God has gifted you with and become the healthy person you've always wanted to be. I'm not asking anyone to spend on gym memberships, all I’m saying is make the most of what’s around you. Let’s be honest; walking is free!! This is the second time I am being a part of this fantastic initiative called ‘Max Bupa Walk For Health’ that encourages individuals as well as families to adopt the healthy habit of walking.”
Ashish Mehrotra, MD and CEO, Max Bupa said, “With each passing year, we see more enthusiastic participation from Mumbaikars at Max Bupa Walk For Health. It is great to see so many Mumbaikars coming together – alone, with family and friends – to demonstrate their commitment towards a healthier self. We’ve always given people newer, more exciting reasons to walk for their health, and with the introduction of Power Walk, we are sure more and more Indians will be inclined to try their hands at the intensive work-out that can enhance one’s over wellbeing.”
Rannvijay Singh said, “It doesn’t take a lot to stay healthy, but people simply lack the motivation to get started and stay committed to their fitness regime. The first and easiest step to good health is walking for just 30 minutes a day. I am thrilled to be a part of Max Bupa Walk for Health since it’s a serious commitment towards building a healthier India and encouraging the young and old to walk more for a fitter tomorrow. I am particularly excited about introducing the concept of ‘Power Walk’ for the first time in India.”
Over the last five years, the initiative has garnered support from a number of celebrities, health and fitness enthusiasts, social activists, politicians and sports personalities including Akshay Kumar, Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan, Sania Mirza, Shilpa Shetty, Sonam Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Smriti Irani and others.
Aside from the walk, there was plenty of action at the Max Bupa Walk for Health event to amplify the fun quotient – Zumba dance session, RJ on stage, music, food, free health checks, and live performances. Kids got to meet their favorite cartoon characters Motu, Patlu and Dora. Walkers also participated in exciting on spot contests at the venue and won prizes. Participants from several leading NGOs, walking groups and communities, corporates and colleges and a host of popular brands like Green Sole, Nickelodeon, GoQii, FitPass, Bookmyshow and Lets Walk Gurgaon have also joined the initiative.
