MUMBAI—Excel Entertainment’s “Fukrey Returns” has emerged as a hit and is unstoppable at the box office. The comic entertainer has maintained a stronghold, collecting 70 crore nett at the box-office within 12 days in India. It is the biggest hit in 2017 after “Bahubali 2: The Conclusion” and the successful biggies with top stars, and what is remarkable is that it is a non-star-cast film.
The film raked in Rs. 2.10 crore on its second Tuesday, and is expected to continue its dream run owing to the outstanding word-of-mouth despite “Tiger Zinda Hai” devouring screens on Dec. 23. The family entertainer is also tickling the funny-bones of the audience worldwide.
Starring Pulkit Samrat, Richa Chadha, Varun Sharma, Ali Fazal and Manjot Singh the movie has taken forward the story of the first “Fukrey” (2013), in which the four “Fukras” (slackers) were trying to make easy money. Co-produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani and directed by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba, who also wrote the film with Vipul Vig, it starred Pankaj Tripathi and Rajiv Gupta in key roles.
In trade parlance, there is a term called “clean hit” that means a film that earns decent to more profit not only for its producers across the table but also for all those who deal with it later – the distributors and the exhibitors as well. Most successes and hits of late never fulfill these conditions. This year, only “Bahubali 2: The Conclusion,” “Judwaa 2” and “Golmaal Again” had been clean hits until now.
Interestingly, “Fukrey Returns” is the first clean hit ever from Excel Entertainment, which started making films in 2001 with “Dil Chahta Hai!”
