MUMBAI—As we take a look back at the advent of Hrithik Roshan as “Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai” celebrated 18 years, we see a (literally) overnight superstar
Roshan who commanded a never-seen-before mass hysteria for a debutant actor.
Before Jan. 14, 2000 (a mere four days after his 26th birthday), no one knew that a young boy named Hrithik Roshan would create such a fan frenzy. His father, veteran actor Rakesh Roshan, who had already proved to be a successful filmmaker since 1987, steadfastly refused to change the film’s release date, as Jan. 7 saw the release of Aamir Khan-Dharmesh Darshan’s “Mela” and Jan. 21 was to witness Shah Rukh Khan’s debut production “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani” with favorite director Aziz Mirza.
Roshan took to Twitter to celebrate his debut film’s 18 years, saying, “It was the first month of the first year of this century. I remember it as my second birthday. 18 today in my career. Thanks for this unconditional love !! #18YearsOfKahoNaaPyaarHai been reading all your wishes.”
The ticket sellers at the iconic Gaiety Galaxy cinemas in Mumbai expressed their thoughts on the storm that came. A ticket collector, Sharad Parab, said, “I started working at Gaiety in 2000 itself, and just 2-3 days later, the film released. The fan frenzy of the public was immense, and people were running, falling to watch the film. The crowd that gathered then was unrealistic. He became a star overnight. “
Another ticket collector, Jagdish Sakpal, said, “I have been working here for 40 years now, “Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai” released 18 years back and had a stupendous run at the theaters. A lot of new actors came after him, but none got such stardom and possibly never will.”
On the work front, Roshan is currently prepping for his biopic, titled "Super 30," based on the life of mathematics genius Anand Kumar. After this, the actor will be seen in an action-thriller from Yash Raj Films with Tiger Shroff and will also ring in the fourth franchise of “Krrish” – “Krrish 4,” which is slated for release in Christmas 2020.
