Hrithik Roshan and Ranveer Singh have been finalized to star in two different biopics from Phantom Entertainment; Roshan will be playing the role of math genius Anand Kumar, while Ranveer Singh will star as cricket legend Kapil Dev. (photos provided)

MUMBAI— It is confirmed after much speculation that it is Hrithik Roshan, and not Akshay Kumar, who will be playing the role of mathematical genius Anand Kumar in “Super 30.” And the man who has been entrusted with the responsibility of directing the film is Vikas Bahl, also one of the partners in Phantom Entertainment.

Kumar had even posted a photograph along with Roshan when the latter went to meet him. This was immediately followed by Akshay Kumar being “almost finalized” to play the role. But after that, there was a fall-out between the film’s producers Madhu Mantena (of Phantom) and Priti Sinha over the film’s leading man, as per a report.

Roshan will reportedly be spending as much time as possible at Anand Kumar’s office and home in Patna to prepare for the role. Besides learning to solve theorems from Kumar, Roshan will reportedly be also hiring a voice coach to train him in the Bihari dialect. The heroine is not decided yet.

Kumar, the Patna-based mathematical wizard, runs a very innovative educational program under the aegis of Ramanujan School of Mathematics, through which he searches for 30 meritorious talents from among the economically-backward sections of the society and prepares them for an admission into India’s prestigious IIT (Indian Institute of Technology). The USP of Anand Kumar’s ‘Super 30’ is that the selected students are given free coaching, lodging and food and that, too, without the help of any donation or aid from any individual, government or corporate donors.

Also, Ranveer Singh has been confirmed to play Kapil Dev in a film centering round India winning the 1983 World Cup in the U.K. After a lot of speculation again, the film directed by Kabir Khan, will bring to light one of the most important events in Indian cricket history. Dev had then led the Indian cricket team to its maiden World Cup win.

Khan also takes a break from his political dramas here. He has already completed the scripting of the film. The director said in a media release, “As a young schoolboy, when I watched India win the 1983 Cricket World Cup, I had no idea that from that day onwards cricket in India will change forever.  As a filmmaker, for me, the journey to that win, filled with raw energy and the sheer passion of that young Indian team, is probably one of the most exciting stories I have worked on. And it’s great to have Ranveer come on board to play Kapil Dev, as honestly I could see no one else in the role.”

Vishnu Vardhan Induri of Vibri Media and the founder of Celebrity Cricket League, who are co-producing the film with Phantom Entertainment, said, “Our dream of wanting to make a movie on the incredible journey of the Indian cricket team during the 1983 World Cup only gets bigger with Kabir Khan and Ranveer Singh coming on board. With his energy and passion, we feel that Ranveer would perfectly fit the role of Kapil Dev, who is one of the greatest sporting legends India has ever produced.”

The film will be shot at real locations and will be going on floors early next year.  Singh plays a sportsman for the first time. The film will be backed by a powerful support cast and the casting of the other cricket players is in process.

In the era of “Daddy” and “Haseena Parkar,” it is gratifyingly delightful to have two more illustrious Indian citizens rather than anti-national elements featuring in biopics.
