MUMBAI—Eros International’s new film, yet to go on floors, stars Shah Rukh Khan as a dwarf, and Deepika Padukone is reportedly doing the female lead. The film is being produced under the banner of Eros International and is directed (and probably co-produced) by Aanand L. Rai.
The film will need a humongous quantum of VFX. In fact, the actor’s production house and VFX team at Red Chillies will also come on board as co-producers too. Notably, SRK and Eros had had a fall-out in 2014 after working together from “Om Shanti Om” (2007) to “RA.One” (2011) to “Chennai Express” (2013).
However, refuting rumors of the film’s budget, Rai said in a press release, “It is an expensive film with Khan-saab as it involves VFX. But definitely it is not Rs. 150 crore.”
Which makes sense: Today, a Rs. 150 crore film will need the barest minimum revenues of Rs. 300 crore to break even, that too assuming that P & A (publicity and advertising) is included in the budget and is not additional.
Today, a film like “Raees” made on a budget of approximately Rs 110 cr. (all inclusive) did only Rs. 120 crore business in India (instead of Rs. 220 cr. minimum, as per the specific deals done), putting distributors deeply in the red. The overseas and other revenues could not match up to the total business needed, though the film might just break even over a few years.
