NEW DELHI — Bollywood star Kajol is one of seven names being considered for a part-time member position on the Prasar Bharati Board. Other names on the list include singer Anoop Jalota, former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s media adviser Ashok Tandon, and journalist Minhaz Merchant.
According to sources, the Ministry of Home Affairs recently gave security clearances to the list of seven names. These names are being considered for appointment as part-time board members of the public broadcaster. According to the Prasar Bharati Act, its board is to have six part-time members, and there are currently four vacancies.
These names will now be sent to a committee, headed by vice president Hamid Ansari and comprised of the Information and Broadcasting secretary and Press Council of India chairman. From the list, four names will be finalized by the committee to be the part-time members on the board, officials said.
The part-time member vacancies on the board have existed for nearly a year as some of the earlier members resigned after a change in government at the center, sources said.
As per the Prasar Bharati Act, part-time members have to be people of eminence in public life, and while their term of office shall be six years, one-third of them shall retire after two years.
