MUMBAI—Kajol is all set to make a ‘go back’ (that is, return) to the South film industry after two decades with “VIP 2 (Velaiilla Pattadhari 2),” which translates as “The Unemployed Graduate 2.” The actress, who had kickstarted the shoot of the film, recently shared details of its teaser release on social media.
“VIP 2” explores the fate of struggling employees, and Kajol plays a gray role as the owner of a company. Posing like a boss along with her ‘employee’ Dhanush, she posted the first look of the film on her Instagram page, urging her fans to check out the teaser that hit the ‘Net on Jun. 7.
The teaser showcases Dhanush in a dashing avatar as he reprises the role of an engineer and tries to fight his enemies. The previous installment showcased the story of Raghuvaran, an unemployed graduate, who finds a job but soon realizes that it is where his series of obstacles begin.
Besides Dhanush, other South stars from the first installment, like Amala Paul, Saranya Ponvannan and Samuthirakani, are retained. Saranya, whose character died in the first film, was also selected to portray a role in the film. Directed from her screenplay by Soundarya Rajinikanth, “VIP 2” is slated to release on Jul. 28.
The Tamil comedy-drama has Dhanush also co-producing the film and writing the story and dialogues. The film, which is also co-produced by S. Thanu, has music by Sean Roldan. The theme music composed by Anirudh is retained.
Following the positive response and commercial success of their 2014 film, “Velaiilla Pattadhari” aka “VIP,” Velraj and Dhanush worked on the production of “Thangamagan” (2015), which was initially reported to be a sequel to their previous film.
Later, in mid-2016, Dhanush’s sister-in-law, Soundarya Rajinikanth, joined with producer S. Thanu to make a romantic drama film titled “Nilavukku Enmel Ennadi Kobam” and cast Dhanush in the lead role. The project never took off, and in a sudden turn of events, Dhanush revealed that he would instead collaborate with Soundarya for “VIP 2.”
Kajol returns to the South two decades after “Minsara Kanavu,” whose Hindi dubbed version was “Sapnay” (1997). Dhanush had said that he was in awe of the actor: “Kajol ma’am is full of energy. Her energy is so infectious that it motivated people to work with the same enthusiasm. She is a very friendly and warm person. We had a great time working with her.”
