MUMBAI — Ram Madhvani’s biopic “Neerja,” starring Sonam Kapoor and Shabana Azmi, is now open to audiences hoping to get a first look at the life of the heroic flight attendant.
Kapoor plays the role of Neerja Bhanot, the daredevil flight attendant of Pan American Airlines, who lost her life to terrorists after trying to save passengers onboard the hijacked Flight 73, Sept. 5, 1986.
Bhanot posthumously became the youngest recipient of India’ highest civilian award for bravery, the Ashok Chakra, and was only 22 when she passed away.
Kapoor said, “There are times in an actor’s career when a very special role in a special motion picture comes your way. The biopic of Neerja Bhanot is one such. I feel honored and humbled to have the opportunity to essay the role of India’s youngest Ashoka Chakra awardee.”
The screenplay is written by Saiwyn “Mary Kom” Quadras, and the film is produced by Fox Star Studios and Atul Kasbekar’s Bling Unplugged Productions.
The 29-year-old actress took to Instagram to share the first picture of her look in “Neerja.” In the photo, Kapoor is seen in the getup of a flight attendant, sporting shoulder-length hair.
“Hello everyone! This is me as Neerja in our tribute to Neerja Bhanot. This is my most special film … thank you @foxstarhindi @blinglive,” Kapoor posted.
