It’s finally official. ABC has given a pilot order to an Indian American female-led reboot of “The Greatest American Hero,” the comedy-drama superhero television series which aired on ABC in the ‘80s.

The project, which received a put pilot commitment at the network in September 2017, is from Indian American writer-producer Rachna Fruchbom and Nahnatchka Khan’s Fierce Baby, reports Deadline. 20th Century Fox TV, where Fierce Baby and Fruchbom are based, co-produces with ABC Studios (see earlier India-West story here: http://bit.ly/2xjzKcc).

The single-camera comedy follows Meera, a 30-year-old Indian American woman who loves tequila and karaoke and has spent her life searching and failing to find meaning, much to the chagrin of her traditional Indian American family. An inexplicable event occurs that will change the course of Meera’s life forever when she is entrusted with a super suit to protect the planet.

Fruchbom, who currently writes for ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” and who previously wrote for NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” will pen the pilot and executive produce with “Fresh Off the Boat” creator Khan, Mandy Summers and the original series creator Stephen J. Cannell’s daughter, TV director Tawnia McKiernan (“Criminal Minds,” “Blue Bloods”).

The original series, which was an hour-long and starred William Katt in the lead role, debuted on ABC in 1981 and ran for three seasons.

No actress is attached yet.
