Talented, gifted, prolific and mysterious. These are some of the adjectives that can be used to describe legendary singer and innovator Prince. Spiritual? Yes. Prince passed away April 21 in a Minneapolis suburb. Known to be very close to his religious and spiritual beliefs, Prince was raised a Seventh-Day Adventist in Minneapolis. Religion informed every part of his life: He once told PBS that he informed his mother an angel told him he would no longer suffer from the epileptic seizures that plagued his early childhood. In 2001 his conversion to the Jehovah's Witness faith started circulating. His conversion became more public in 2003.
Prince's Twitter photo avatar is an image of him with his eyes closed, but his third eye between the eyebrows remains wide open. When meditating with one's eyes closed, one often focuses on the third eye. An open sixth chakra can enable clairvoyance, telepathy, lucid dreaming, expanded imagination, and visualization. Is that an indication of his spiritual beliefs?
"Prince embraced this avatar during the last few years, also known as the divine-seeing eye in Hinduism," Hindu statesman Rajan Zed said in a statement.
Zed, who is the president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, noted that the icon of the third eye was attributed to Hindu deity Shiva. The third eye on Lord Shiva’s forehead symbolized his omniscience and powers, and is understood to be a channel for light and heat.
The third eye is generally associated with spirituality, and specifically the sixth chakra used in many traditions and faiths. Modern spiritual guru Deepak Chopra's website explains that the sixth chakra, Ajna, is in the area of the third eye, which is found in the space between the eyebrows. It encompasses the pituitary gland, eyes, head, and lower part of the brain. An invisible yet powerful third eye, this is your center of intuition. A spiritual chakra, which means "beyond wisdom," Ajna leads you to an inner knowledge that will guide you if you let it.
The singer who was known not to believe in time, stopped celebrating his birthday decades ago, refused to age and could stay awake for days when working on his new songs. Now that he's gone, much is being talked about his celebrated life. His alternative thoughts on love, sex and God were a subject of his songs, and he was a deeply spiritual person.
Prince and his creations were influenced by many cultures and beliefs.
"Prince Rogers Nelson, electrifying and inventive musician who touched many hearts, displayed his spiritual longing. There were references to themes like God, forgiveness, religion and spirituality, God’s creation, salvation of the soul, etc., in his music. His faith-inspired activism and his spirituality-grounded political evolution hinted at his being a spiritual person," Zed indicated.
With Prince gone, he's left behind him hundreds of hours of music that'll live on forever. May he rest in peace.
