Shashi Kapoor, the talented, handsome and charismatic heartthrob of Hindi and international cinema passed away on Dec. 4 at age 79. He had been ailing for many years.

Kapoor began his career playing the child character of his elder brother Raj Kapoor in films Raj-ji produced and directed: "Aag" in1948 and "Awaara" in 1951, and a few more.

His first films as a lead actor in "Char Deewari" and "Dharmaputra and "Prem Patra" flopped.

He was the first internationally known Indian actor to act in some English language films, including Merchant-Ivory's "Householder" in1963, "Shakespeare Wallah" in 1965, "Bombay Talkies" in 1970 and "Heat And Dust" in 1982.

His notable success began with a supporting role in "Waqt.” His memorable roles were in "Jab Jab Phool Khile,” "Sharmilee,” "Aa Gale Lag Ja" and "Satyam Shivam Sundaram,” among others.

His pairing as a second lead to Amitabh Bachchan in 12 films also made him more famous, with the hits "Roti Kapda Aur Makan,” "Deewar,” "Kabhi Kabhie,” "Trishul,” "Suhaag" and "Namak Halaal.” Film buffs will always remember his unforgettable retort to Amitabh Bachchan in "Deewar": "Mere paas Ma hei.”

He also produced notable films like "Junoon,” "Kalyug,” "36 Chawranghi Lane" and ""Utsav.” He produced and directed "Ajooba,” starring Amitabh Bachchan.
