She was a sight to behold in a red and gold brocade saree, a neatly-tied bun adorned with a gajra, polka or uncut diamond jewelry and sindoor or vermillion, and he looked dapper in a black bandhgala and white churidaar, and finished off his look with a hand-embroidered Pashmina shawl.

One of the most talked about couples in India, star cricketer Virat Kohli and Bollywood actress Anuskha Sharma, who got married in Tuscany, Italy, Dec. 11 in a close family affair after a courtship of over four years, appeared hand-in-hand at their reception ceremony at the Taj Diplomatic Enclave in New Delhi, Dec. 21.

For their traditional look, the duo put their faith in ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who took to Instagram to describe the stars’ requests.

“I don’t think Indian brides feel complete without wearing the color red in one of their functions. Anushka decided to wear red on her reception. And much to my absolute delight, it would be a red Benarasi saree. From the by-lanes of Peeli Kothi in Benaras,” he wrote. The red bindi, the sindoor and the mogras in her hair just made the look more potent and powerful... Bollywood can play a major role in spreading awareness about Indian textiles and handlooms. And I must say the occasion couldn’t be better.”

Describing Kohli’s outfit, Mukherjee wrote: Virat chose to complement his new bride in a very subtle and elegant manner. He wore a black textured silk signature bandhgala with the house buttons in 18k gold and a white silk kurta with hand-woven brocade churidaar. He teamed it with mojris from the Sabyasachi accessories line and a hand-embroidered antique Pashmina shawl from our ‘Kashmir Revival’ project.”

The extravagant reception, which the couple hosted exclusively for their Delhi-based friends and relatives, also saw the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan, and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, among other high-profile names.

Kohli and Sharma have also lined up another grand reception to be held in Mumbai, Dec. 26, which will reportedly be attended by members from the Bollywood and cricket fraternity.

After celebrating the New Year together, Kohli will fly to South Africa for the upcoming series, while Sharma will begin shooting for Anand L. Rai’s yet-to-be-titled film with Shah Rukh Khan.
