The last time we saw Roma, Priyanka Chopra’s character in “Don,” she was a woman betrayed — and furious about it.
Now, as “Don 2” releases Dec. 23, Roma is channeling that rage. Audiences will see new layers unveiled as her character comes to grips with the dashing bad boy played by Shah Rukh Khan (I-W, Dec. 16).
“She wasn’t angry in the first film,” Chopra told India-West from Mumbai late Dec. 17.
“But at the end of the movie, if you remember the first ‘Don,’ she falls in love with Vijay and at the end of the film realizes that he was never Vijay, he was Don throughout. So she’s really angry and feeling terribly betrayed by him.”
And where a weaker girl might pine and mope, or perhaps bury the tragedy in a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, Roma — aka “Junglee Billi” — is made of stronger stuff.
“She’s spent the last four years training to become a cop, so that she could put him behind bars,” Chopra explained. “And when she meets him [in “Don 2”], she hates him tremendously — but at the same time he’s the man she fell in love with.
“So there is this incredible amount of intensity between them, this love-hate relationship that they share.”
Chopra shares screen space once again with Khan, Om Puri and Boman Irani. Now, Lara Dutta has joined the cast of the film, Farhan Akhtar’s sequel to his 2006 mega-hit “Don.”
“ ‘Don 2’ is Farhan’s best work I have seen,” Chopra told the Indian media.
We can’t help but notice that in some news stories about the actress, Chopra still goes by the nickname “Piggy Chops,” dreamed up by her costars on “Bunty aur Babli.” So India-West asked the world-class beauty and 2000 Miss World what she thought of the nickname.
“Well, now, it’s become really annoying,” Chopra laughed. “I think it’s a very cute name, but I really think we have to move on. I like the fact that we’ve moved on to Jungli Billi!”
Chopra has always been one to chose her roles in the interest of variety. She’s equally comfortable in a range of roles from light romantic comedies (“What’s Your Rashee?”) to socially aware thrillers (“Kaminey”), and won the National Award for her work in Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Fashion.”
Now, Chopra is acing action roles with “Don 2” and the upcoming thriller “Barfee” and sci-fi “Krrish 2.”
“I love all kinds of roles. I won’t say it’s just about action,” Chopra told India-West.
“I just love anything that challenges me. And that is what’s cool about it. With action, I can do stuff that just pushes me.
“I had this fight sequence in the movie that I had to train for. In itself it was a bit difficult for me, but I think it’s turned out really, really nice.”
Between shooting dates, Chopra flies back and forth to Los Angeles, where she is recording an album on the Interscope label in collaboration with DesiHits.
“I’m still working on it, there’s a lot of work yet to be done,” she said. “We’re hoping to drop a single by about mid-next year.”
Chopra, who has years of musical training, feels the album will appeal to a broad mix of listeners. “It’s going to be pop for sure, and it’s going be dance music, club — a mix of house and pop in a way,” she said.
