MUMBAI — Soap queen and now box-office Czarina Ekta Kapoor, and the mush-cum-“different entertainment” man Karan Johar, will join forces for a romantic movie.
Karan tweeted, “Ekta and I are super excited about the script we are producing together … will announce details as we cast the film and title it!” Ekta praised Karan as one of the most prolific filmmakers of today.
She also thanked Swati Shetty, president of Balaji Films, for bringing them together to produce the script. Ekta said, “The film is an urban take on love — it is quirky, edgy, dramatic and intense.”
An upbeat Karan said that when Ekta told him just a line of the entertaining script, he knew that he had to be a part of it. Speaking about debut director Akash Roy, Karan said, “At Dharma, we believe in launching young talent.” Two big names would be cast in the film, he revealed.
A really bizarre angle is that Karan and Ekta are supposed to be what is known as an “item” for a long while, and there had even been rumors about their wedding three years ago.
They have been known each other and been good friends since childhood, and have been looking forward to working together for a long time.
Interestingly, Karan had appeared as himself in a comic cameo in Ekta’s flop 2008 film “C Kompany.”
However, the box-office picture has seen them at opposite ends of a spectrum: Ekta, after false starts, has had a success streak of late, while Karan, after a dream run, has floundered oftener than not since 2009.
Both have experimented a lot in recent times and now that she has co-produced films with Sanjay Dutt’s company White Feather Films and others, this is perhaps the right time collaborating.
