NEW YORK (PTI) —  The Nehru jacket, popularized by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, is making a new fashion statement across the globe.

The minimalist approach to Nehru's jacket even inspired the Beatles as well as Sammy Davis Jr., who claimed to own more than 200 Nehru jackets, according to Time Magazine.

Other well-known leaders such as Cuba's Fidel Castro and China's Mao Zedong also jumped on the fashion bandwagon while sporting popular tracksuits and safari suits during their rule.

Zedong began his own fashion trend by wearing a “Mao suit” during his reign. “Today the suit, which is almost always pictured in a stale gray, green or blue color, tends to be representative of communism as well as Mao himself,” added Time Magazine.

The "Mao suit" began to lose popularity after Zedong’s death in 1976 after leaders switched gears to western style business suits and contemporary clothing. Cuba's Fidel Castro, on the other hand, wore red, white and blue Adidas clothing and tracksuits.
