The California Medical Association has joined health advocates across the nation in hopes of promoting Cervical Health Awareness Month in January.

According to the press release issued by the CMA, cervical cancer is the second most common form of cancer worldwide, responsible for causing 4,000 deaths in the United States annually.

The CMA Foundation has recognized four organizations which aim to reduce cervical cancer within the Latina community. The organizations include Altamed Health Services, Latinas Contra Cancer, UMMA Community Clinic and Worksite Wellness LA. During the month of January, these organizations, in partnership with the CMA Foundation, will host events and clinics highlighting the importance of early cervical cancer detection.

“Cervical Health Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity to remind women that screenings and vaccines are widely available at a low-cost or free. Early detection can save lives,” said president and CEO of the CMA Foundation Carol Lee.
