Values Versus Peer Pressure
clip
Youth face various forms of peer pressure such as smoking.
  • United States

Growing up Indian in America with parents who constantly reinforce what is best for you may not always be the coolest thing in the eyes of your peers.

Even though you may think that your parents may be interfering in your life, it is not just your parents who are naturally like this-- it is also the Indian community.

Some of the most important values constitute what it means to be an Indian. Examples include the necessity of a close family and the idea that if you work hard now, you can enjoy life in the future.

This is a conflict that the Indian youth of America face everyday, whether deciding to go out on a Friday night with friends or study for fear of disappointing one’s parents.

I believe there is only one correct solution to this problem, and that is to learn to balance your life and try to evenly expend time having fun or studying. Too much fun or too much studying could end up hurting a person, so the key to success is to know how to find a balance and to follow your gut instinct on decisions that may impact one’s future. As Charles Colton once said, “He that knows himself, knows others.”
