The fourth collaboration between critically acclaimed Chicago choreographers Hema Rajagopalan and Shirley Mordine, PUSHED TO THE EDGE continues their thoughtful examination of Eastern and Western cultures through movement, allowing the physicalities of each company, Mordine & Co and Natya Dance Theatre, to exist alongside each other, equally celebrated.
PUSHED TO THE EDGE embodies the cultural and artistic strength that results from the meeting of forms, styles, and artistic "languages." The choreography is undertaken with the understanding that culture is written by, in, and through the body, and that how we move is in many respects who we are. Exploring places of tension and discord that exist between two distinctive movement vocabularies, crises of identity and selfhood are identified and explored.
Danced to live music with an original musical score composed by acclaimed musician Chitravina Ravikiran, a prolific composer of Carnatic music. Originally fromIndia, Ravikiran is widely known for composing music that brings together diverse styles and genres. A Chicago-based jazz saxophone player and percussionist collaborate with Ravikiran for this production. Video created by John Boesche. Lighting design by Ken Bowen.
