The Elk Grove Unified School District board appointed Bobbie Singh-Allen in a 4 to 2 vote Aug. 16 to fill the board’s vacant Trustee Area 4 seat.
District superintendent Dr. Steven Ladd swore the community activist into office that night.
“I don’t have all of the solutions but what I do have are dedication and hard work to do what is necessary and in the best interest of our children,” Singh-Allen said in a speech to the school board, according to the Elk Grove Citizen newspaper.
Singh-Allen serves on the Elk Grove Teen Center USA board and she earlier served on the Elk Grove Food Bank board. The Indian American is the vice president of the California Lodging Industry Association.
Singh-Allen is also active in the local Sikh community where she helped organize “Wear a Turban Day” for political leaders last year to raise awareness about her culture after two elderly Sikh men were gunned down in Elk Grove.
“She got on the ground floor and put together a coalition to make sure that people across the country and across the world knew (those murders) are not what Elk Grove is about,” Amar Shergill, a local attorney and Singh-Allen’s friend, told the Elk Grove Citizen.
