“Bumbug the Musical,” a new rock opera by Indian American artists Samrat Chakrabarti and Sanjiv Jhaveri, completed a successful two-week-plus run at the Clurman Theatre at Theatre Row here Dec. 22.
Described as “an electrifying musical reinvention of ‘A Christmas Carol,’” told through the looking glass of New York City immigrants, the show tells a tale of deli owner and immigrant Scroogewala (Andrew Ramcharan Guilarte), who left his motherland years ago to pursue the American dream, and the motley crew of misfits who remind him that “love, loss and laughter are all a part of that dream he’d almost given up on,” said a spokesperson.
The show was originally commissioned and developed by Desipina Productions, and is presented by LAUGHistan. Chakrabarti is a versatile actor-musician whose credits include “Loins of Punjab Presents” and Deepa Mehta’s upcoming “Midnight’s Children” among many other appearances. Jhaveri, too, is an actor with appearances on “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and many other TV shows and films.
