Priyanka Chopra was her normal talkative and chirpy self at the “Bubbly Bash” to celebrate the launch of the item song, “Babli Badmash,” from the forthcoming film, “Shootout At Wadala,” co-produced by Sanjay Gupta and Ekta Kapoor. The event was held Mar. 18 at Escobar, a suburban pub.
Besides the trio, composer Anu Malik was present, though the rest of the cast of the film was not. Writer Jaswinder Singh Bath (“Yamla Pagla Deewana” and its forthcoming sequel) and Australian model-actress and actress Kristina Akheeva, who debuts as a heroine in the latter film, were spotted besides Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.
Lyricist Kumaar, who has written the song, was clearly upset at being left out of the limelight. Kumaar, who is on a high now with several released and forthcoming films, said the song was composed over several sittings.
“Babli Badmaash,” he told India-West, came after alternatives like “Banda Badmaash” and more. It was pure chance that he got the phrase when Anu Malik was singing out the R.D. Burman-esque tune to him. Nevertheless, the music director went around claiming that the phrase was his! The song had elements of resemblance to the “Waris” (1969) R.D. Burman hit “Lehraake aaya hai mausam bahaar ka,” which was earlier reworked differently by Pritam in “Dhoom:2”, though the beats were again similar to R.D. Burman’s relentless rhythm in the title-song of “Shaan.”
Priyanka Chopra’s retro look in the song is clearly inspired by Amitabh Bachchan's song “Saara zamana” from “Yaarana,” complete with the lights on her rubber-cum-leather outfit.
Said Chopra, “I have acted in three remakes of Mr. Bachchan (“Don,” “Agneepath” and the forthcoming “Zanjeer” and I am his big fan! Unfortunately, I couldn't play his role. So this song is my ode to him!”
The song has been rendered by Sunidhi Chauhan and choreographed by Ahmed Khan. ”I had a great experience while doing the song. It was hectic but fun. We had to finish the song in two days as I had to shoot for another film,” said Chopra.
Asked about the tag of an item girl, the actress said, “I think the item girl tag is overdone. It is a guest appearance I did for Ekta. By calling it that way it sounds a bit cheap. I am happy the way the song has come out. I hope people like it.”
About reports that Priyanka had checked the lyrics of the song after the stance of the censors on such songs, she agreed, “We were aware of the recent happenings. So we decided not to use any controversial words in the song. It has to be a clean song," she said. “But I think we should focus on the laws for protecting women rather than targeting film industry.”
Sanjay Gupta also finds the term “item girl” derogatory. “It’s a special song,” he said. “We were clear we wanted a guest appearance in the film. And we wanted a star like Priyanka Chopra.” Ekta Kapoor also agreed and stated that Chopra had done a “fabulous job.”
In a change from the routine, the bar served only champagne and soft drinks. The lyricist could be credited with this, we guess, for without “Babli” there would be no Priyanka Chopra and no “Bubbly Bash.”
