Dr. Rohit N. Kulkarni

Dr. Rohit N. Kulkarni, senior investigator in the section on islet cell and regenerative biology at Joslin Diabetes Center, has been named professor of medicine by Harvard Medical School. Kulkarni has had many roles at Joslin, and contributes to the educational symposia organized by Joslin, the ADA and JDRF in the areas of diabetes and obesity. He received his medical and doctorate degrees at St. John's Medical College and the University of London's Royal Postgraduate Medical School, respectively.

Ashok Roy has been named as the new VP of administrative and business affairs at Jacksonville State University. Previously he was VP of administrative and business affairs after serving as VP for finance and administration for the University of Alaska system. He also had stints at Kennesaw State University, Indiana University, the city of Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. He is a graduate from the University of Ranchi, University of Calcutta, Utkal University, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Indiana University and Sardar Patel University.

• Purdue University student Vignesha Bhamidi, of Chennai, was named a university innovation fellow by the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation. Bhamidi recently completed training to join the national program run by Epicenter. He is a graduate student in electrical engineering technology at the Purdue Polytechnic Institute. Fellows are supported by faculty or administrators.

Swati Bhattacharya has been named chief creative officer for FCB Ulka, the global agency’s Indian operations. Bhattacharya began her career as a copy trainee at JWT and spent 22 years with the agency. In 2011, she was appointed national creative director, working on clients such as Close-up, Airtel, Kit Kat, 7Up, Pepsi, Pizza Hut, UNICEF, Sunrise and Slice. Prior to joining FCB, Bhattacharya served as principal partner of the Dentus Mama Lab.

Sankaran Thayumanavan received the Chemical Research Society of India’s medal of honor at a ceremony during the organization’s annual meeting at Punjab University in Chandigarh. The medal is given for outstanding contributions to chemical sciences by scientists of Indian origin working outside of the country. Thayumanavan was specifically recognized for his contributions to the area of supramolecular chemistry and nanomaterials. The CRSI was established in 1999 as part of 50th anniversary of India’s independence.

CommutAir announced the appointment of Subodh Karnik as president and CEO. Karnik's appointment follows the finalization of the agreement with United Airlines for the introduction of Embraer 50-seat jet aircraft at CommutAir. Karnik advised CommutAir's senior management team in the formation of a plan to apply for the new United contract. He helped lay the groundwork for the now-approved project by working with the company and United to formulate the necessary entry into service plan for the new aircraft, which involves intensive work between the company and its regulatory authorities, chiefly the DOT and the FAA.
