Indian American singer-songwriter Biba Singh released “Akhian,” a modern rendition of Surinder Kaur’s folk classic “Akhiyan’ch tu Vasda,” on Thanksgiving Day Nov. 28 on the London-based Moviebox record label.

The single was launched with a haunting music video as well as an additional remix video featuring Canadian rapper Mr. Bolly.

Singer-producer Mandeep Dhaliwal from Calgary, Canada, who is best known for his multiple albums with Jugni Records, produced the song, while Sorin Pavelesco, a producer from Montreal-based BTB Music Productions, produced “Akhian” the remix.

Both videos are directed by Hemant Thavathia and shot at the historic Wing’s Castle in upstate New York.

Singh said, “It’s such a popular song. It’s one of my favorites and I wanted to make a modern version for the younger generation to enjoy, too.”

Singh was discovered by Bollywood bhangra singer Daler Mendhi, who also released her first pop album in 2009 titled “Biba.” She then went on to release her second album in 2011, titled “Biba For You,” which was launched by singer Bappi Lahiri in Mumbai.

Since then, Singh has toured India, the United States and Canada and opened for acts like RDB, Imran Khan and other Bollywood singers. She most recently performed at New York City’s India Day Parade.

“Akhian” is the first single from Singh’s third album. The songstress is known for singing Punjabi dance numbers like “Aja Nachle” and “Nachne Da Cha,” as well as the love ballad “Tere Bina Nahi Jeena.”

“Akhian” is available for download on iTunes.
