By bringing to the stage a mix of classical Indian dance and contemporary, Ramita Ravi made a smooth entry into Fox’s Emmy Award-winning dance reality show, “So You Think You Can Dance.”
Delivering a riveting performance on “Indian Summer” by Jai Wolf, the Indian American student, who is pursuing her master’s degree in public health at the University of Pennsylvania, charmed the judges with her talent during the auditions for Season 14 in New York.
The Murrysville, Pennsylvania, resident displayed her dancing skills in episode four of the dance reality series, which was aired July 17.
Ravi has been dancing competitively since she was five years old, winning ten regional titles and National Miss Headliner in 2013, according to a report in the Tribune Review. She said she plans to work in health innovation/entrepreneurship with a dance career on the side.
“I’ve been watching the show since its first season. It’s always been a dream of mine to audition. My best friend in college auditioned for the show a few years ago, and he encouraged me to try out this year,” the report quoted her as saying.
Ravi told the publication that the audition process for her first reality television competition was both “nerve wracking and exciting.”
Over the course of trying out in New York and progressing to the Academy (callback rounds) in Los Angeles, she performed two solos, a group routine and choreography in hip hop, contemporary, ballroom and jazz.
“The talent that surrounded me was unbelievable, and it was incredibly inspiring to dance alongside them,” she said.
Fusing classical Indian and contemporary dancing, she said, helps her to express her own Indian American identity and make her experiences accessible to members of both communities.
“My goal with sharing this style is to inspire future generations of Indian Americans, or individuals with mixed identities, to be proud of who they are,” Ravi said.
The judges were quite impressed with Ravi and gave her a go-ahead for the choreography round.
The next episode of the dance show will be aired July 24 8/7c.
