MUMBAI — He is the official makeup artist for the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2016. Donald Simrock — who has worked with top stars like Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Eva Mendes, Lindsay Lohan, Avril Lavigne, Cindy Crawford, Kate Upton, Nicki Minaj and Madonna — was all praise for Indian American actress Mindy Kaling’s fashion choices.
Simrock feels Kaling has brought a change in the way people in the U.S. perceive fashion.
“Mindy Kaling has set up the tone for a lot of fashion in Hollywood. With the mixing of corals and bright colors and patterns, she has paid attention to it through her Indian cultural history and introduced it to America. It has become a trend.
"I haven’t worked with her, but I find her awesome. She is a co-producer of the show ('The Mindy Project'), and I love women having that control and making big things,” Simrock told PTI.
In India, the only celebrity Simrock has ever worked with is actress Shraddha Kapoor, who he feels is beautiful human being and an impressive talent.
“I have worked with Shraddha for the cover of a magazine. She is beautiful as a person and fun to work with. She is down-to-earth and very friendly. She is a triple threat — she dances, acts, sings and is so gorgeous at the same time. I respect that she prefers to stay without makeup when not working. This was my first Bollywood experience, and I hope to have more good ones,” he said.
Calling India a big fashion market, Simrock said the trends here are powerful and unique at the same time.
“The fashion scene in India is huge. India represents 20 percent of the world’s population. Their views and opinions are just as important as anyone else. Fashion in India is very powerful and unique,” he said.
Simrock appreciates the fact that Indians still love their textiles and continuously work to revive it.
“I like the fact that people in India are focusing on textile. Even I have learned about how artisans make things. The dying art has been revived with the help of people who have passion about this art. For me, this is incredible to see. I am amazed with the work detail,” he said.
Simrock, who is working for the first time in an Indian fashion week, feels they are tiring but enjoys the adrenaline rush.
“I think Indian fashion week is very condensed in terms of so many things happening in small period of time, so it is really hectic. But this increases the energy level,” he said.
He finds the shimmer in Indian makeup interesting and appreciates the fact that people in the country have opened up to experiments.
“It has been crazy in India. I am learning a lot. I love the shimmer Indian makeup has. People in India have definitely opened up and are experimenting a lot with makeup trends,” Simrock noted.
