MUMBAI— Behind the scenes and on it, “Indian Idol 10: seems to be a very happening exercise, as it gets ready to take off on Sony Entertainment Television Jul. 7. India’s first singing competition on reality television (it began in 2004), it has Season 1 (and some more seasons) judge Anu Malik, with his famous propensity for spot ‘shaayaris,’ again, along with Vishal Dadlani and singer Neha Kakkar.
During the auditions, the judges re-lived their childhood days when a contestant sang a song that brought back the memories of childhood for all the judges. The trio ran onto the stage and performed a ‘Fugadi” (Maharashtrian folk dance) as they loved doing this in childhood. The set was abuzz with laughter as everyone was chirping about things they have done as a kid.
It’s rare that you meet your idol and they fulfill your wish. But this happened backstage on the sets of the Delhi auditions when a contestant came and shared his desire to sing along with Dadlani. Dadlani went on stage and sang with him, making his day.
In another audition shoot, Malik composed an instant and funny version of the song “O O Jaan-e-Jaana” that Dadlani broke into laughter.and fell off his chair. The shoot was stalled for 10 minutes. The musician was rolling on the floor with laughter and had actually hurt his elbow!”
When asked about how he feels about his co-judges, Malik said, “When I am with Vishal and Neha, it feels like I have known them from a 100 years. We all are a big family now. It feels as if we have done all the “Indian Idol” seasons together. The kind of bond we share is mind-blowing. From day one, we have clicked as a team.”
Malik has always encouraged contestants to better themselves regarding raags, tempo, voice modulation etc. by offering them sound advice. After Monali Thakur, once again he gave a chance to a contestant to sing with him in the studio. Indira Das, one of the youngest contestants, and from Kolkata, impressed the judges but, Malik liked her the most. Indira lives with a family of 60 people and loves classical music and Malik fondly called their family “Daas Ka Dum.”
Said Das, “I have started learning music from my mother and my ultimate dream is to come to Mumbai and establish myself as a good singer. All the other contestants are very talented and I was nervous before performing, but the judges are very cooperative. I got really excited when Anu-sir praised my singing and gave me a chance to perform with him in the studio. It is no less than winning a title.”
Sony is ready to kick-start a new refreshing chapter of “Indian Idol” with season 10. The theme of the show “Mausam Music Ka” promises the best and is set to raise the bar yet again with not just impressive talent but their awe-inspiring stories as well. The judges and contestants celebrated the success of the past nine seasons with a cake-cutting ceremony and jamming sessions.
