It was by leagues the most popular song from “Collie No. 1” in 1995, and virtually the only song that lives on—“Husn Hai Suhana” (already released as a re-creation) comes a very distant second.

“Main To Raste Se Jaa Rahaa Tha,” rechristened as “Tujhko Mirchi Lagi” and “re-imagined” by Lilo George - DJ Chetas, has been just released, just four days ahead of the film’s release on Dec. 25. Yes, original director David Dhawan and producer Vashu Bhagnani, as we all know, have “re-imagined” the film too, for GenZ! With the same title! Taking everyone down memory lane, the all-timer song, featuring original singers Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik, recreates the magic with Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan as they step into the dancing shoes of Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. The original song was composed by Anand-Milind and lyrics were penned by Sameer.

Speaking about the new version of the song, Dhawan said, “Songs from the original “Coolie No. 1” are hugely popular and timeless, and according to me, they also helped the film. I was always clear that if I ever made this film again, I would use these blockbuster songs. The songs from the original were created by music directors Anand Milind and written by lyricist Sameer, who are close to me. We have done a lot of work together, and including these songs in the new film was my way to payback.”

Wonder if “payback” is the right word, especially as music companies and producers themselves pocket the royalties in most such cases despite legal clauses!
