“The Mindy Project” star and creator welcomed her first child — a daughter named Katherine Swati Kaling — at 10:50 a.m. Dec. 15 in Los Angeles, People confirmed via the birth certificate.

The 38-year-old Indian American star paid tribute to her late mother, Swati Roysircar, by naming her first child after her, added the report.

News of Kaling’s pregnancy broke in the second week of July when E! News cited sources claiming it was “an unexpected surprise” for the 38-year-old but that there will not be any changes made to production schedules for the last and final season of the Hulu show, “The Mindy Project.”

Her pregnancy was confirmed when her co-star of Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” Oprah Winfrey, confirmed that the actress is five months’ pregnant and that she is “excited for her.”

Reacting to Winfrey confirming her pregnancy, Kaling told Ellen DeGeneres on her eponymous talk show: “If anyone is going to announce big news about your private life, Oprah Winfrey is the person. You can’t complain that much about it. And you also can’t be like, “Hey, Oprah, zip it’ — because she’s almost like a religious figure.”

Kaling opened up about her pregnancy in an interview on the Sunday edition of NBC’s “Today” show, where she joked with host Willie Geist that she’s excited to have a child, so she’ll be able to “openly criticize other parenting.”

She also said that he hopes to use her late mother as an example of how to be a good mom. Her mother, she said, was open-minded and always supportive of her career choice.

“My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us, just loved us and really wanted us to be happy no matter what we did,” she told Geist. “My career choice was not something that she was familiar with and she was just so supportive of that. And if I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I’d be so happy.”

Kaling’s mother, Dr. Swati Roysircar, an ob/gyn, died from pancreatic cancer in 2012, the same day her show was picked up by Fox. Kaling loosely based her character of Dr. Mindy Lahiri on her mom.

Kaling, however, has chosen to not reveal the identity of her baby’s father.
