The Alameda County, California, District Attorney’s office charged an Indian American Lyft driver May 4 with three counts of sexual assault, including rape, oral copulation, and digital penetration, on an unconscious victim.

Jaswanthreddy Baireddy, 24, of Fremont, Calif., is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, Calif., on no bail. His next hearing is scheduled for May 22.

According to police reports, on the night of April 8, Baireddy, driving a rented white Hyundai Elantra, was working within the Bay Area picking up customers, and responded to the 29-year-old victim’s location in Oakland, Calif.

He initially drove her to a friend’s home in Berkeley, Calif., but when the friend was not there, Baireddy advised he was now “off duty” and offered to give the victim a ride to her residence.

“The victim believed she was going to be taken home,” said the Fremont Police Department in a report.

Baireddy subsequently drove past the victim’s exit on the freeway. The victim informed Baireddy he missed the turn-off and expressed a desire to go home. Baireddy suggested the victim rest while he got her food, according to the police report.

He then proceeded to drive to Fremont, stopping at a drive-through restaurant, and eventually brought the victim to his own residence in Fremont.

Once home, Baireddy allegedly escorted the victim inside and offered her marijuana, according to the police report; he then directed her to the second floor of his home. Once upstairs, Baireddy informed the victim he was too tired to drive and suggested she lay down. Shortly after, the victim was allegedly sexually assaulted, according to police.

Following the alleged assault, Baireddy drove the victim home. The woman sought medical care and also called police. Initially, another East Bay Police Department took on the investigation, but upon learning where the incident took place, the Fremont Police Department took over.

During the investigation, Baireddy was contacted and provided a statement to investigators. Based on the victim’s statement, Baireddy’s statement and physical evidence, Baireddy was arrested, according to police.
